On My Reading List

On my reading list right now is We Hunt the Flame by Hafsah Faizal.  🌙✨

This fantasy novel is set in an Arab world–inspired landscape filled with deserts, myths, and an atmosphere that feels both enchanting and dangerous. It’s a refreshing change from the typical Western-inspired fantasy, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the cultural backdrop shapes the story.

At the heart of the novel are two characters: Zafira, a young woman who must disguise herself as a man in order to hunt and provide for her people, and Nasir, a prince known as the “Prince of Death,” burdened with duty and a reputation built on fear. Their paths collide in a mission that could change everything.

What draws me in is the way the book seems to weave together themes of identity, duty, survival, and destiny. Zafira’s disguise raises questions about the expectations placed on her world, while Nasir’s dual role as assassin and heir forces him into a constant struggle between obedience and humanity. Their journeys promise conflict, growth, and a deeper look at what it means to carry the weight of responsibility.

The novel also promises a mix of myth, adventure, and personal struggle, with an atmosphere that feels both epic and intimate at the same time. It’s the kind of story that seems perfect for long discussions and reflections.

Here are some discussion questions if you’re planning to read We Hunt the Flame:

  1. The story is set in an Arab world–inspired landscape filled with deserts, myths, and danger. How does the setting shape your experience of the story?

  2. Zafira disguises herself as a man in order to hunt and provide for her people. What does this choice say about gender roles and identity in her world?

  3. Nasir is known as the “Prince of Death,” yet he is also a son, a prince, and a human being burdened with duty. Do you see him more as a villain, a victim, or something in between?

  4. Both Zafira and Nasir are driven by duty and survival. How do these motivations bring them together or push them apart?

  5. The novel blends myth, adventure, and personal struggle. Which of these elements feels strongest to you as you read?
